Gladden Spit and Silk Cayes Marine Reserve
Gladden Spit and the Silk Cayes were designated a marine reserve in 2003. Located about 26 nautical miles off the coast of Placencia and part of the Belize Barrier Reef, these three uninhabited cayes are surrounded by clear water and colorful coral gardens that are teeming with even more vibrant reef fish. Get to spot the biggest fish in the ocean, the whale shark, who come here seasonally to feed on the many aggregated spawns of fish.
An Unspoiled and Isolated Tropical Paradise
Laughing Bird Caye National Park
This National Park is one of 7 protected areas under UNESCO’s Belize Barrier Reef World Heritage Site. Found just 11 nautical miles east of Placencia, Laughing Bird Caye is a snorkeling and diving paradise that was named after the cheeky call of Laughing Gulls who once inhabited the island. It’s one of the most popular inner reef dive destinations in Belize thanks to the abundance of coral habitats and marine life populations.
